This original oil painting is of one of my favorite places - on the waters of Lake George in upstate New York. As John Muir wrote, “Everybody needs beauty… places to play in and pray in where nature may heal and cheer and give strength to the body and soul alike.” Lake George is such a place.
This chapel can only be seen from on the lake and is on it's own private little island. It is the Chapel of Isaac Jogues on Hecker Island on Lake George, NY built and owned by the Paulist Fathers founded by Isaac Hecker, a transcendentalist. It was originally named the Corpus Christi Chapel after the original name of Lake George - Lake of the Blessed Sacrament. Hecker Island is one of a group of islands called "The Mother Bunch".
The chapel has a fascinating story and more can be learned in this great article. I also greatly enjoy this story by Bob Weinman which poetically and poignantly captures the beautiful spirit of Lake George and the islands.
